Ashley's very interested to find out what Ereuvir will choose, and willing to take a risk with it. If it's too contrary to Ashley's self-image, well, that's a kind of unflattering and Ashley's willing to argue the point. But the pleasure of being given something more wondrous than he would know to choose for himself is well worth trying for.
Well-read though Ashley is, he doesn't get the reference. His education is eclectic, having been left mostly to Arkady, since Ashley rebelled against his tutors and only studied the subjects he (or Arkady) found interesting. His knowledge of gothic and romantic literature is extensive, and he has an impressive comprehension of art, anatomy, and medicine, but the gaps in his knowledge are immense.
He pets his fingers admiringly over Ereuvir's chest, very content to be held close and cuddled.
